Day Fifteen of my “30-Days of Gratitude” journey
September 25, 2017
From the time I can remember, you were a source of unconditional love. I am grateful for your warmth. I am grateful for your kindness. I am grateful for your patience. I am grateful for your attention. I am grateful for your full acceptance of who I am.
I am grateful that today when I watched the sun rise over the grass covered hill that I was reminded of the pleasant, peaceful, sweet-earth smelling mornings on your farm to go collect the eggs with you. I am grateful for the afternoons shucking peas with you. I am grateful for all the delicious homemade fruit pies you prepared. I am grateful for your whispered “good nights.”
I am grateful for your strength of character. I am grateful that when things got tough, you got tougher. I am grateful for your leadership. I am grateful for you helping me come of age.
I am grateful for the clothes you made. I am grateful for the comfortable beds and fresh linens you kept. I am grateful for the clean house you maintained.
I’m grateful you took me to the zoo. I am grateful you took me shopping for art supplies. I am grateful you picked me up from school when I was ill. I am grateful you let me carry your handbag. I am grateful for the opportunity to stand next to you in church and listen to you sing,
“Some bright morning when this life is over
I’ll fly away
To that home on God’s celestial shore
I’ll fly away”
I am grateful, perhaps above all, for the questions you posed that made me realize my understanding of God was a bit too narrow. I am grateful that our conversations compelled me to search for more answers. I am grateful that you supported my name change even when you probably thought I would never actually do it.
Mamaw, I am grateful for all the peace, joy, and comfort your memory still brings to my heart after all of these years. I hope I get to see you again.
Your memory is forever held tightly in my heart,
