Gratitude Letter to Johnie

By Carisa Carlton

Day Eighteen of my “30-Days of Gratitude” journey

October 2, 2017

It may be because of your love for the wild west, primitive cultures, and constant travel that I naturally fell in step with anthropology.

I am grateful for your example of active living. I am grateful for your humility and simple lifestyle. I am grateful for your intuition, and especially for your insight into people from all walks of life. I am grateful for your warnings and I am grateful for your guidance.

I am grateful for you teaching me to explore. I am grateful for you teaching me to maintain relationships. I am grateful for your protection. I am grateful for your enthusiasm for driving nearly every desolate road in America.

I am grateful for your care. I am grateful for your love. I am grateful for your kindness. I am grateful for your willingness to stand up for truth and for what you believed in no matter the price. I am grateful for your protection. I am grateful that you accepted my choices even when they fell out of line with popular opinion.

I am grateful for your smiles and your laughter and I am grateful for the home-cooked meals we shared. I am grateful you stayed in contact with my mother. I am grateful for the fires you kindled. I am grateful for all the love you nurtured between your many grandchildren.

You were a wonderful grandfather to me, and I am grateful I had the opportunity to know you and I am grateful I was able to spend time with you before you left. I hope to see you again.

Carisa
