Gratitude Letter to Eric

By Carisa Carlton

Day Ten of my “30-Days of Gratitude” journey

September 20, 2017

Dear Eric,

As I sit here covered in firestick poison burns from cutting my plants this morning, my mind wonders back to a hilarious Thanksgiving dinner at my house. You showed up late with homemade jalapeno cornbread and a wild emergency room tale, and I think there was some poison ivy mixed in with that story somehow.

Eric, I am so grateful that you were a major part of my young adventures. I am grateful for your laughter. I am grateful for your logic. I am grateful for your always-on-a-roll wit and sarcasm.

I am grateful for all of the holiday turkey flops. I am grateful for the Portola Valley spa parties. I am grateful for the Pink Floyd Morrison Planetarium laser light shows. I am grateful for all the Simpson’s reruns.

I am grateful for your story-telling style. I am grateful for your honesty. I am grateful for your curiosity. I am grateful for your welcoming cheer when I call.

I am grateful for the examples you set for me in building your financial security. I am grateful you didn’t always take my advice. I am grateful for all the work you put into your homes.

I am grateful for your ability to laugh about almost anything. I am grateful for the hikes with you. I am grateful for the paragliding experiences with you. I am grateful for the impromptu camping trips. I am grateful for the meditation trips we shared. I am grateful for your willingness to live a free and happy life. I’m grateful you stayed true to yourself and I am grateful you pursued the woman you wanted.

I am grateful for the opportunity to watch you care for your wife. I am grateful for the opportunity to see your loving smile as you look at your children. I am grateful for the opportunity to watch you care for your families. I am grateful for the love you showed my child.

I am grateful that you were a wonderful part of my youth and I am grateful that I can call you anytime and pick up right where we left off — no matter how long it’s been.

I am grateful you told me to, “State the obvious, but not the incredibly obvious” because that philosophy still permeates my writing and conversations to this day.

I am grateful for the opportunity to watch you grow. I am grateful for your lasting friendship. I am grateful you introduced me to Natasha.

I am grateful for all that you are and all the adventure you introduced to my life. I will keep those memories forever.

Your friend,

Carisa
